Project Details

The aim of this research is to examine the image of women in primary school curricula and textbooks in 100 years’ time in Turkey, the change in the image in the process, and the social, political, economic, and cultural reasons of the factors affecting this change.

The subject of “women” in curricula and textbooks has been examined by some researchers, including different periods and different textbooks. However, this research will have the feature of being the first study in which the curriculum and textbooks of the five courses (Science, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Social Studies and Turkish) that have been taught in primary schools for a century will be examined as a whole.

Additionally, this is not the only reason that reveals the value of the work. Studies on "women" in curricula and textbooks generally coincide with the time of the letter change in Turkey, which occurred in 1928. With this research, primary school curricula and textbooks before letter change, in other words, the textbooks which were taught before 1928 and written in Arabic letters will also be
included in the research. In this context, this study will be the first study to examine the effects of social, political, economic, and cultural structure in a holistic manner in the change of primary school curriculum and textbooks in 100 years’ time. In this respect, the project will include researchers from different disciplines, and with this dimension it’ll have a unique value. That’s because most of the studies that deal with the subject of women in the textbooks has been carried out in different disciplines separately. Most of the articles and books written are individual studies. However, this research is a multi-disciplinary study which will be conducted by researchers working in different disciplines.

The project, in which the qualitative research method will be used, has a methodologically unique value. While mostly document analysis and partly content analysis techniques were used in the studies on “women” in the textbooks, the discourse-historical approach will be used for the first time in this research which has a wide scope of period and content. The image of woman constructed in the texts and visuals of primary school curricula and textbooks in the said periods will first be marked with document analysis, and then the data will be coded with content analysis as required by Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by taking linguistic tools into account. Then, the analysis of the data will be analyzed with the Discourse History Approach (DHA) as an approach in CDA, and the data will be
critically reviewed with the linguistic tools of nomination and predication strategies.

32 months is foreseen for the project to be carried out. It’s planned to present the findings and results obtained as a result of the project in a national and international symposium. It’s also planned to publish the findings as a book and through articles in academic journals, one of which will be in an indexed journal. Additionally, workshop will be organized to present the results at the end of the
project.
